The 2005 guidelines on nosocomial pneumonia published by the American Thoracic Society and the Infectious Disease Society of America highlighted the concern that healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP) could be caused by multidrug-resistant organisms and recommended the inclusion of empiric coverage for both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Researchers have now made use of national administrative data from the U.S. Veterans Health Administration from October 2001 through September 2012 to assess risk factors for HCAP due to MRSA or Pseudomonas.
