Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for obesity but costly and highly invasive. Endoscopic bariatric procedures have been proposed as an alternative.
Investigators prospectively evaluated the effects of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG; using full-thickness sutures) in 25 consecutive patients (21 women) with a body-mass index of 30–40 kg/m2. Median follow-up was 9 months (range, 5–20). Nine patients underwent a repeat endoscopy at 3 months to assess the status of the gastroplasty. Four patients were evaluated pre-and postprocedure for gastric emptying, meal tolerance, and levels of glucose, insulin, and gut hormones (measured when fasting and after a meal) 3 months after the procedure.
