The Montefiore Medical Center group has established a large database of patients with colon ischemia that investigators have now interrogated to assess the risk for acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) in those with isolated right-sided colon ischemia (IRCI). The following observations were made regarding 313 consecutive patients who were hospitalized with colon ischemia from 1998 through 2009:
Of patients with colon ischemia, 20.8% had IRCI.
Of patients with IRCI, 15.4% also had AMI.
Of patients with IRCI and AMI, 90% had AMI diagnosed at initial presentation.
Patients with IRCI and AMI had higher risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, higher blood urea nitrogen, and higher white blood cell count than those with IRCI alone.
