Quality-of-care indicators (QIs) have been proposed specifically for the management of patients with cirrhosis (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Jan 2011 and Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol 2010 Aug; 8:709). However, there is little evidence indicating that adhering to such QIs actually improves clinical outcomes.
In the current study, researchers retrospectively examined the association between adherence to eight individual QIs for management of new-onset ascites and two clinical outcomes (30-day readmission and 90-day mortality) in 302 patients hospitalized for new-onset cirrhotic ascites in a single health network. They used medical records to determine adherence to eight Delphi panel–derived QIs for ascites management. Results were as follows:
