To better characterize the clinical presentation, physiology, and treatment outcomes of orthostatic tremor (OT), researchers retrospectively reviewed data from 184 patients (64% women) with OT who had been evaluated at Mayo Clinic from 1976 to 2013.
The mean age at OT onset was 59; a family history was documented in 5% of cases. The mean delay in accurate diagnosis was a notable 7.2 years. The average tremor frequency was 15.7 Hz (range, 12.5–20 Hz). In 97% of cases, the tremor could be transmitted to the arms on weight-bearing (i.e., by leaning). Lower-extremity tremor symptoms were consistently relieved by assuming a seated position, by leaning, or by walking. Falls were reported in 24% of the cohort.
