Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is used for the prevention of infection in patients with secondary hypogammaglobulinemia. Thromboembolic events (TEEs) are reported with this therapy, but whether these adverse effects are directly attributable to the IVIg or are related to patient disease, age, or other factors has been unclear.
To examine the risk for TEE in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or multiple myeloma (MM) starting treatment with IVIg, investigators conducted a retrospective review of Medicare-linked data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registries. Of patients with CLL or MM (age, ≥66), a total of 2075 new recipients of IVIg were propensity matched to 8035 nonrecipients.
