Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is in the diagnostic differential for hydrocephalic patients presenting with gait disturbances, with or without dementia or urinary incontinence. It is probably more common than previously supposed. Between 30% and 70% of NPH cases result from known causes such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, meningitis, or trauma. The disease mechanisms of iNPH are not well understood. To identify risk factors in a representative population from Gothenburg, Sweden, researchers identified 1235 patients aged 70 or older from the Swedish population register between 1986 and 2000 who underwent brain computed tomography (CT) in one of several research studies.
