For women with rheumatic disease, preconception counseling is paramount.
Many medications used for management of rheumatic diseases are contraindicated during pregnancy. To update and clarify prior guidelines, the British Society of Rheumatology and British Health Professionals in Rheumatology conducted a systematic review addressing use of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), antimalarials, corticosteroids, anti–tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents, and other biologics. In part II, similar information was compiled for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), low-dose aspirin, anticoagulants, bisphosphonates, antihypertensive medication, and pulmonary vasodilators for the management of multisystem rheumatic disease.
