Ebola virus disease (EVD) has prompted a multinational response, although few cases have appeared outside West Africa. Justifiable concerns have focused on human-to-human transmission, especially in nonendemic areas, and high EVD-related mortality. To better profile patients with EVD who were treated in the U.S. and Europe, clinicians who cared for those patients in 2014 and 2015 (at 15 hospitals in 9 countries) established a collaborative network that included frequent conference calls and other activities.
This descriptive survey focuses on 27 patients (median age, 36 years; 70% men; 35% with comorbid conditions). Of the 22 patients (81%) who were healthcare workers, only 3 (11%) had acquired EVD in the U.S. or Europe.
