Studies suggest a causal association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and gastroesophageal reflux (GER). The pathophysiologic hypothesis is that negative intrathoracic pressures generated during OSA events precipitate reflux. Studies have also shown that both OSA and GER symptoms improve with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
