Whether marijuana use is associated with the later development of anxiety, mood or substance-use disorders remains unknown. To learn more, researchers analyzed data from a prospective, national, community-based study of 34,653 individuals (mean age, 45) who underwent diagnostic interviews 3 years apart.
Analyses controlled for 18 relevant risk factors. The group of 1279 participants who reported cannabis use at the first interview were 9.5, 2.7, and 2.6 times more likely than the nonuser group to meet criteria at the second interview for a new cannabis, alcohol, or any other drug-use disorder, respectively; they were also 1.7 times more likely to have nicotine dependence.
