Despite the availability of effective antiretroviral therapy, HIV-positive people have excess mortality compared with HIV-negative people. Increased levels of biomarkers for inflammation (interleukin-6), monocyte activation (sCD16), and coagulation (d-dimer) have been associated independently with increased risk for death in both HIV-positive and HIV-negative populations. To assess whether adjusting for baseline levels of these biomarkers alters the increased mortality associated with HIV infection, investigators analyzed data from the Biomarker Cohort of the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (Med Care 2006; 44(8 Suppl 2):S13).
