Thirty-day hospital readmission has emerged as one of the most important pay-for-performance benchmarks and is now considered by policymakers as an indicator of hospital quality. Before policymakers implement 30-day readmission for neurological conditions as a quality measure, validation of readmission as being associated with worse patient outcomes in each subspecialty area is important. Most research on readmission has focused on the economic and resource burden it places on hospitals; its association with clinically relevant parameters such as patient outcomes has not been emphasized.
