These investigators compared the effectiveness for closure of Mohs and excisions of buried vertical mattress sutures alone and with the addition of overlying adhesive strips. The authors subdivided 43 closures at least 3 cm in length with each half randomized to one of the two methods.
Based on blinded rater evaluations using the Patient Observer Scar Assessment Scale, there were no differences between the two closure groups at 3 months (mean scores: 12.3 [SD 4.8] with no adhesive; 12.9 [SD 6.3] with adhesive). Also, spread (increase in scar width) was equal with both approaches at follow-up.
