Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus often infects rodents such as mice, hamsters, and rats. Prevalence of LCM virus in house mice is estimated at 5%.
In April 2015, a 15-year-old girl in Minnesota presented to her pediatrician after experiencing 5 days of fever, myalgia, left-parietal headache, and photophobia. Symptomatic therapy had temporarily relieved her symptoms at home. Eight days after visiting the pediatrician, she presented with recurrent headache and photophobia and was hospitalized with a 102.9°F fever and meningismus. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed an elevated white blood cell count (differential, 68% lymphocytes), elevated protein, low glucose, and a negative Gram stain.
