Clinicians often use published indices or calculators (e.g., the Revised Cardiac Risk Index (NEJM JW Gen Med Oct 1 1999 and Circulation 1999; 100:1043) to estimate perioperative cardiovascular risk in patients who are considering noncardiac surgery. However, noncardiovascular events also contribute to perioperative morbidity and mortality. In this study, researchers developed a preoperative score to predict overall postoperative mortality; they used data from 5.5 million adults who underwent surgery “conducted in the presence of an anesthesiologist” in 958 hospitals in France in 2010. Predictors were derived from patients in 479 hospitals and validated in patients in the remaining hospitals.
