Anticoagulant therapy in premenopausal women with new venous thromboembolism (VTE) raises two concerns. First, is it safe for these patients to continue or initiate hormonal contraceptive therapy; and second, do young women on anticoagulants have excessive menstrual bleeding?
To address these questions, investigators analyzed data from two clinical trials (EINSTEIN DVT; NEJM JW Oncol Hematol Mar 2011 and N Engl J Med 2010; 363:2499, and EINSTEIN PE, N Engl J Med. 2012; 366:1287) that compared the safety and effectiveness of rivaroxaban versus enoxaparin or warfarin in 1888 patients (median age, 41.3 years) with acute symptomatic VTE.
