Some evidence suggests that patients hospitalized on nights or weekends have worse outcomes compared with patients admitted during standard working hours for multiple illnesses. The data on upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) are conflicting with regard to this issue.
Investigators retrospectively assessed 30-day mortality among 507 emergency endoscopies for UGIB with high-risk findings, stratified by timing of endoscopy (“after hours” — evenings, weekends, or holidays — and standard weekday hours). Ulcers were found in 299 procedures and varices in 182.
