Optimal upfront treatment for patients with grade 2 glioma has not been established. To address this question, researchers enrolled 254 patients with newly diagnosed grade 2 glioma in the randomized, phase-3 trial RTOG 9802 to receive either radiation therapy alone or radiation in combination with procarbazine, CCNU, and vincristine (PCV). Patients were at least 40 years old at diagnosis or had undergone subtotal resection (indicating increased risk for aggressive disease).
Median overall survival was 13.3 years with radiation plus PCV versus 7.8 years with radiation alone. Progression-free survival was also significantly better in the combined treatment arm than in the radiation-only arm: 51% versus 21% at 10 years, respectively. The surviv…
