Of the one third of the global population infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, 5% to 10% will progress to active tuberculosis (TB), yet we currently lack tools to identify these individuals before they develop disease progression.
To identify potential biomarkers of TB progression, investigators prospectively collected blood samples from healthy South African adolescents with latent TB and monitored them for progression to active disease.
