Environmental factors can modify genetic risks for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Single people are more likely than cohabiting married people to have AUD, possibly related to less cohabitation, personality traits, and social factors. In a longitudinal study, researchers analyzed the influence of a first cohabitation or marriage on AUD risk among 3,220,628 people in Sweden born from 1960 to 1990.
AUD criteria were met by 3.3% of men and 1.1% of women (mean age at onset, 27). Of the people with AUD, 34% of men and 12% of women had early-onset criminal behavior or drug abuse recorded before age 18; 39% of men and 47% of women had at least one relative with AUD.
