Cell therapy to regenerate cardiac function has stimulated substantial interest that so far outpaces any evidence of benefits. Studying the therapy is complex because of its numerous approaches. In a manufacturer-sponsored, phase IIb, investigational trial, researchers assessed an augmented, autologous marrow preparation in 126 patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (mean age, 65; 92% men).
Participants had left ventricular ejection fraction of ≤35%, severe symptoms (New York Heart Association [NYHA] class III or IV), an implantable defibrillator, and lack of eligibility for mechanical revascularization.
