Clinicians, patients, and the general public are greatly concerned about the potential health risks of marijuana, especially given its increasing legality. In a prospective, Swedish national study, investigators examined long-term associations of marijuana use and early mortality, beginning with self-reported lifetime use at military conscription in men during 1969 and 1970, when most (93%) were ages 18 or 19.
The follow-up continued through 2011, when participants were about age 60. Data were analyzed for 45,375 participants, of whom 8.6% died by end of follow-up.
