Having dense breasts impedes the performance of screening mammography and is therefore associated with larger tumor size and worse prognosis when cancer is detected. Current U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidance states that evidence is insufficient to assess the benefits and harms of adjunctive imaging in women with dense breasts (NEJM JW Womens Health Feb 2016 and multiple citations). In a continuing analysis of data from a previously reported manufacturer supported study (NEJM JW Womens Health Aug 2014 and JAMA 2014; 311:2499), investigators focused on breast density when comparing outcomes of digital screening mammography alone (453,320 examinations) versus screening plus tomosynthesis (174,414).
