Because of their anti-inflammatory properties, statins have been considered as potential antidepressants, but studies have had mixed results. In a Danish nationwide, registry-based, cohort study, researchers examined outcomes of all 872,216 individuals starting selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) between 1997 and 2002, during which time 113,108 of these SSRI users began using a statin.
Total doses and durations of treatment were calculated for both medication classes. In general, statin users were older, were less psychiatrically but more medically ill, and were more likely to use other cardiovascular medications.
