Observational studies have generated conflicting data on an association between fluoroquinolone antibiotics and retinal detachment; the two most prominent studies — one positive and one negative — were published in JAMA (NEJM JW Infect Dis May 2012 and JAMA 2012; 307:1414; NEJM JW Gen Med Jan 1 2014 and JAMA 2013; 310:2184). Now, French researchers have conducted a nationwide study involving nearly 28,000 patients who underwent retinal-detachment surgery during a recent 3-year period.
