A placebo-controlled trial finds benefit from ketoprofen gel.
Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is not available in the U.S. Investigators in three Turkish emergency departments (EDs) assessed its ability to treat mechanical low back pain in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. All participants received intravenous dexketoprofen, and each participant received either topical ketoprofen gel or matched placebo at the site of pain.
Among 140 randomized patients, pain reduction after 30 minutes was greater in the ketoprofen gel group than in the placebo group, as measured on a 100-mm visual analog scale (reduction in pain, 52 vs. 37 mm).
