Bariatric surgery is common in women of reproductive age. Up to 40% of these women report infertility, and many are interested in becoming pregnant. Most bariatric specialists recommend against pregnancy for 12 to 23 months following surgery to permit optimal weight changes and to ensure restabilization of nutritional status. In a study of contraceptive knowledge among clinicians in bariatric surgery programs, 272 members of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery completed surveys. Responses came from physicians (31%), licensed nurses (27%), mid-level clinicians (20%), registered dieticians (15%), and others such as social workers (7%). Overall, 71% of responses were from female clinicians.
