Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) affects 2%–15% of young women. As optimal first-line medical therapy is undetermined, investigators performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether treatment with oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) or metformin provides superior results. Only randomized, controlled trials including adolescents aged 11–19 years were included.
Of 172 studies reviewed, only 4 studies with 231 participants met predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria; 170 of the 231 participants were included in the final analysis. Based on evidence of very-low to low quality, results were as follows:
