Risk for Cancer and Adenomas with Self-Reported Positive Family History

Although family history in a first-degree relative is an established risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC), it is unclear whether the number of relatives with CRC, or whether the affected relative was a parent or sibling, modifies that risk.

In a prospective study conducted in 16 Asia-Pacific regions, investigators assessed outcomes in 11,797 asymptomatic individuals undergoing a screening colonoscopy between 2008 and 2015.

The prevalence of CRC at colonoscopy in persons with ≥2 family members affected with CRC, patients with sibling probands, patients with parent probands, and those with no family history of CRC was 3.1%, 1.1%, 0.9%, and 0.6%, respectively.
