Epidemiologic studies have shown that Asians have an increased risk for hemorrhagic stroke compared with white patients. This pattern has led to concerns about the safety of full-dose IV tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) in Asian patients with acute ischemic stroke. In Japan, a reduced dose of TPA (0.6 mg/kg) has been approved instead of the conventional dose (0.9 mg/kg). The current study was a randomized trial of these two doses of TPA in 3310 patients with acute ischemic stroke. The patients were predominantly Asian (63%); median age was 67.5 years.
