Although treatment guidelines for infective endocarditis (IE) uniformly recommend intravenous (IV) administration of antibiotic therapy, successful oral treatment of Staphylococcus aureus right-sided IE has been reported in case series and one small clinical trial. Now, French researchers have evaluated outcomes in 426 patients (median age, 64) treated for IE at their institution from 2000 through 2012.
Streptococci, S. aureus, and Enterococci accounted for 40%, 19%, and 12% of cases, respectively.
