Based on results of the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST; NEJM JW Gen Med Aug 1 2011 and N Engl J Med 2011; 365:395), the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends annual screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT) in older adults (age range, 55–80) with ≥30–pack-year smoking histories who smoke currently or have quit within the past 15 years (NEJM JW Gen Med Feb 15 2014 and Ann Intern Med 2014; 160:330). In this analysis, researchers used data from various sources on lung cancer risk factors, incidence, and death to create a more-targeted risk-based model to guide CT lung cancer screening.
