In the 3-year Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT), treating high-risk nondiabetic hypertensive patients to a systolic blood pressure (SBP) target of 120 mm Hg (intensive treatment), compared with a target of 140 mm Hg (standard treatment), lowered the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events or death from 6.8% to 5.2% (NEJM JW Gen Med Dec 15 2015 and N Engl J Med 2015; 373:2103). Older patients (age, ≥75) were eligible solely on the basis of age, as long as they were free from type 2 diabetes, previous stroke, symptomatic heart failure, or dementia. This report focuses on these 2636 older SPRINT participants.
