Do patients who survive sepsis have heightened risk for death during the ensuing months and years? To answer this question, researchers conducted this observational cohort study of late (31 days–2 years) mortality in 960 older patients (age, ≥65; mean age, 79) who were admitted to the hospital with sepsis.
Sepsis patients were propensity-score matched (on age, sex, race, economic status, baseline health status, and numerous other characteristics) with 777 adults not currently in the hospital, 788 patients admitted to the hospital with nonsepsis infections, and 504 patients admitted to the hospital with acute sterile inflammatory conditions.
