Detecting early risk factors to avoid hospitalizations for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) could reduce morbidity in children with type 1 diabetes, as well as reduce healthcare costs. To determine patterns of outpatient care associated with hospitalization for DKA, investigators retrospectively reviewed California Medicaid (Medi-Cal) claims data for children with type 1 diabetes over a 3-year period.
Of 5263 children with type 1 diabetes, 879 (17%) were hospitalized for DKA during the study period. DKA hospitalization was more common in children who were >12 years of age, girls, or insured with Medi-Cal managed care, and in those who had a mental health comorbidity.
