Diagnosis of gonorrhea is recommended to be based not on culture, but on nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). Concerns about antimicrobial resistance and asymptomatic infection have led to a call for a test of cure (TOC) to monitor treatment outcome. Because data using NAATs to ascertain TOC are limited, Dutch investigators conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the appropriate timing of TOC using NAATs after treatment of anogenital gonorrhea. In 2014, 62 adults with anogenital gonorrhea self-collected pretreatment anal, vaginal, or urine samples for RNA- and DNA-based NAATs.
