Achieving the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets in South Africa will have a dramatic impact on the epidemic, but it will also be costly.
The goals of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 initiative are to diagnose 90% of HIV-infected individuals, link 90% of those diagnosed to care and antiretroviral therapy, and achieve viral suppression for 90% of those started on antiretroviral therapy, by 2020. The result would be a 73% virologic suppression rate worldwide, dramatically reducing HIV transmission. Achieving these goals would not be easy. For example, in South Africa, only about 24% of HIV-infected people have achieved virologic suppression.
