Studies of the progression of gastric intestinal metaplasia (IM) and low-grade dysplasia (LGD) to gastric adenocarcinoma conducted in other countries may not be generalizable to the U.S. population.
In the current study, investigators retrospectively reviewed data from approximately 3.4 million patients enrolled in a regional U.S. healthcare system. All patients with upper endoscopy findings of premalignant gastric lesions between 1997 and 2006 were followed through 2013, including 4146 patients with IM, 141 with LGD, and 44 with high-grade dysplasia (HGD).
