The transition to a world without transmission of wild polioviruses involves eliminating use of live oral poliovirus vaccines in favor of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV). Oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) for serotype 2, the virus responsible for about 97% of all circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses, was withdrawn as of April 2016; bivalent OPV (bOPV) is replacing trivalent OPV (tOPV) during the transition phase.
