Controversy about using antidepressants for childhood depression was heightened by concerns about increased suicidality, which led to an FDA black-box warning in 2004. To study antidepressant effectiveness and impact on suicidality in this population, investigators scoured the scientific literature and manufacturer databases and found 34 studies with 5260 participants (mean age, 13.6) receiving any of 14 antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors).
