The turnover rate among career hospitalists is higher than turnover rates in other specialties; this difference might be related to personal morale. Based on prior research into the causes of morale issues among hospitalists and a 2009 pilot survey, investigators developed the Hospital Morale Index (HMI), a survey tool that contains five dimensions (clinical, workload, leadership, appreciation and acknowledgement, and material rewards) and five stand-alone items (family time, job security, institutional climate, opportunities for professional growth, and autonomy).
