Ceftaroline, a modern cephalosporin, is FDA- and European Medicine Evaluation Agency–approved for treatment of acute skin infections and community-acquired pneumonia. Taking advantage of its activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), ceftaroline is used off-label for treatment of other severe infections, e.g., endocarditis or osteomyelitis, which often require prolonged treatment courses. Safety data for these off-label uses are sparse, but several cases of neutropenia have been reported. Researchers now present a retrospective case series of 67 individuals who received ceftaroline for ≥7 days at two large academic institutions between November 2010 and March 2015.
