The U.S. Medical Monitoring Project (MMP) collects a nationally representative data sample of HIV-infected adults in care, at regular intervals. To determine trends in antiretroviral therapy (ART) prescribing and HIV suppression among persons in HIV care, researchers compiled and compared MMP data from 2009 and 2013.
The investigators noted improvements in every sex, age, racial/ethnic, and sexual-identity group. Overall, 94.1% of HIV-infected adults in care were prescribed ART in 2013 compared with 88.7% in 2009. Improvements were larger in women, in younger people, and among black and Hispanic people.
