Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment has improved dramatically over the past few decades. Early detection, individualized and less-drastic surgery, and more effective treatments mean more women not only survive breast cancer but have better quality of life and more normal-appearing breasts than with older approaches. Improved imaging techniques such as mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and tomosynthesis create highly accurate pictures of the breast tissue so cancer can be identified, pinpointed, and removed with the least harm to healthy breast tissue.
