Targeting the chimeric BCR-ABL fusion protein with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has dramatically improved outcomes in chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), with overall survival now approaching that of the general population. However, late complications of chronic daily therapy are not fully known.
Now, Swedish investigators have utilized the National Patient Registry to perform a retrospective analysis of cardiovascular events in 896 chronic-phase CML patients diagnosed between 2002 and 2012. All patients had received TKI therapy; 87.1% received imatinib, 26.9% received nilotinib, and 23.4% received dasatinib. Five age- and gender-matched controls from the registry served as comparators for each patient.
