Stroke accounts for about 10% of deaths worldwide, making it the second-leading cause of mortality. In some parts of the world, such as China, stroke is the leading cause of death. Stroke risk factors have been well elucidated in high-income countries, but less is known about what causes stroke elsewhere. The INTERSTROKE investigators have now published a study of stroke risk factors involving 32 countries on 6 continents.
From 2007 to 2015, more than 13,000 patients with imaging-confirmed ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke were identified at 142 centers. For each case, a community-dwelling or hospitalized control patient was also enrolled. Each participant underwent a structured medical assessment, and blood and urine samples were obtained.
