Bereavement severely tests the resilience of surviving spouses. These researchers analyzed data on resilience across five dimensions of psychological and physical status in 421 individuals who lost a spouse while participating in a prospective, household-based, 13-year study (mean age at spousal loss, 69; 71% women; 47% with at least a high-school education).
On average, respondents provided nearly four ratings before the loss and three afterwards. Only 8% of participants showed resilience across all parameters; 20% showed resilience in none of the five.
