Self-management is an important component in treatment of chronic mental illness. Researchers in Canada sought to identify the most effective self-management strategies for bipolar disorder, as endorsed by both people with bipolar disorder and clinicians.
In the multistage study, the authors identified 493 self-management strategies from patient interviews from previous studies and reviews of academic and lay literature, websites, and books. Of 370 patients and 199 clinicians treating bipolar disorder who agreed to participate and were surveyed about the effectiveness of these strategies in maintaining balance in mood and stopping progression to hypomania or mania, 101 patients (27%) and 52 providers (26%) completed the survey.
