Nonmelanoma skin cancers (basal and squamous cell carcinomas) rarely result in substantial morbidity or death, but approximately 10,000 people in the U.S. die from melanoma annually. Visual skin examination by a clinician is modestly sensitive and specific for detecting melanoma, but the USPSTF concluded in 2009 that evidence was insufficient to recommend for or against routine screening of asymptomatic individuals (NEJM JW Gen Med Mar 15 2009 and Ann Intern Med 2009; 150:194). In this new review, the USPSTF found little new evidence and came to the same conclusion.
